Arches National Park

We ended up visiting Moab and Arches National Park during the yearly Jeep Safari! This meant that there were hundreds of different customised Jeeps everywhere we looked. It did make me think that somewhere there could be a Citroen Safari somewhere in France and I could show my love of all things Citroen off to the French. Anyway I digress, back to the matter in hand. Arches National Park is just 10-15 minutes drive from Moab, which means that we could just hoop into the car and drive in. It seems like the ideal Park to drive through and take in the natural wonders every seanic spot possible. So this is what we did! I wanted capture the drive through the park, like I have done during every scenic drive and so I used my GoPro record a time lapse set of images though the park. The Grand Canyon

  Well the Hoover Dam was on a massive scale and had some nice 1930's architectural embellishments. We took a detour to see it and I think it was worth it. We continued on south along Route 93 until we met Route 66 at Kingman. The Americans' have commercialised Route 66 a little more than I had hoped. A lot of the signs were fancier than they should have been - bright pink backgrounds and brightly coloured text telling you that you are driving along the historic Route 66. Maybe this is something we should do for the M25. The drive itself is nice enough and after doing this section I wouldn't mind doing more at some point. A railway runs parallel for quite a bit of it and we saw numerous freight trains which were far longer than our U.K. freight trains. The towns along the route are all a little run down with old petrol stations and abandoned cafes. I am guessing this is due to modern cars not needing to stop so regularly compared to the cars which would have driven along...

Our Drive to Las Vegas through Death Valley

After cutting our stay short, we started a 9 hour drive across to Las Vegas. We decided it would be interesting to take in Death Valley along the way. We ended up driving south along Highway 91 and then east from Bakersfield. We took a great little valley road across to Highway 395 which twisted and turned and went past Lake Isabella. Highway 395 was your typical American road - long and straight! Although it did have the redeeming feature of having a speed limit of 75 mph.  The landscape as we headed north started to become more and more desolate, you could tell that we were heading into an extremely dry and arid place. After Highway 395 we headed east along Route 190 which runs through Death Valley and it is rather a great drive over a few hours. It has some stunning views and changing rock formations which really make the drive more memorable.  Death Valley is an hour or so from Las Vegas so this is where we have ended our days drive. Kings and Sequoia Canyon

Our Snowed in Cabin! Well the weather in Kings and Sequoia Canyon was a little worse than we expected! We ended up being in the middle of a winter storm. We were lucky however to be staying in the oldest cabin in the park for the nights we were there. Due to weather we only managed to go and walk to General Grant Tree which is the second largest tree in volume in the park after the General Sherman Tree. We couldn't visit the largest tree as the road south was closed due to winter weather.  We decided to cut our stay short when we woke up to be confronted with snow laying on the ground and still falling.

Yosemite National Park

  Our view from Tunnel View on the fist night We are at the end of our few days in Yosemite National Park. We spent the last few days walking around the park taking in all the spectacular sights.  On the first day we walked to Mirror Lake to view the reflection of Half Dome. Then the following day we walked along the Mist Trail, which takes in the Vernal Falls and Navada Falls. We planned to walk back along the John Muir trail but this was closed due a rock fall. So we had to walk back down the same way! On our last full day here we have been walking up to Upper Yosemite Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the park. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park is our next stop.
